Zipp Pushes Gravel Performance Wider with the 303 XPLR Line
Gravel cycling has changed dramatically over the past few years. What was once largely about exploring dirt roads at a leisurely pace has evolved into a legitimate high-speed racing discipline, with riders tackling hundreds of miles at increasingly impressive speeds. Zipp’s answer to that evolution is the 303 XPLR wheelsets. They are designed specifically around the demands of modern gravel racing rather than simply adapting a road wheel for off-road use.
The result is an unusually wide, deep carbon wheel that promises improvements in aerodynamics, rolling efficiency, comfort and control — without becoming excessively heavy.
What is the Zipp 303 XPLR?
The 303 XPLR is Zipp’s dedicated high-performance gravel wheel platform. Unlike many gravel wheels that are essentially road wheels adapted for wider tires, Zipp designed the XPLR around maximizing the performance and ride of a wide gravel tire and a wide rim from the beginning.
Zipp calls its approach to these wheels Total System Efficiency. Instead of focusing only on aerodynamics, TSE targets the four main barriers that slow a cyclist: wind resistance, gravity (weight), rolling resistance, and vibration loss. This results in the best overall package for the purpose.
With the 303 XPLR, Zipp started with a 54mm-deep carbon rim with a huge 32mm internal width. Zipp says this combination lets the rim and tire work together aerodynamically while providing enough air volume to run very low tire pressure.
The 303 XPLR SW is the flagship model. It features Zipp’s ZR-1 hub and Sapim CX Ray spokes. The hub features a new seal design for better durability and smoother bearing performance than prior offerings. The freehub body has more points of engagement than previous models, so the rider’s power gets to the rear wheel more directly. The new hubs are also fairly light. As a system, weighs 1452 grams a pair. While this isn’t head-turning weight, for an aerodynamic wheel designed to be robust enough for gravel riding, it is competitive and keeps the 303 XPLR SW from feeling cumbersome when it’s time to climb.
The 303 XPLR S is the other wheel option in the line. This wheelset features the time-proven Zipp 176D rear/76 front hubset and Sapim CX Sprint spokes. This hubset and spokes bring the wheelset weight to 1610 grams, but bring the price down $600-$700 from the SW. These changes provide the fundamental benefits of the 303 XPLR system to as many riders as possible.
How Much Do the Zipp 303 XPLR Wheels Cost?
At the time of this post, the flagship Zipp 303 XPLR SW is listed at $2200. That’s certainly not inexpensive, but it puts the wheels below many ultra-premium road and gravel racing wheelsets. The Zipp 303 XPLR S, which uses many of the same design principles, is listed at $1550. That makes the 303 S particularly interesting for riders who like the concept of the XPLR SW but want a more wallet-friendly option.
The Biggest Advantage of the 303 XPLR: A Radically Wide Aero Rim
The defining feature of the 303 XPLR is its 32mm internal rim width. That’s wider than the most gravel rims on the market. The purpose isn’t simply to make the wheel look bigger. The wide rim is designed to work with large gravel tires, creating a more integrated tire-and-wheel shape.
Zipp specifically pairs the wheel with approved tires in the 40–61mm range. Additionally, the system is designed to operate at pressures below 30 psi (the rim’s maximum tire pressure is 50 psi). The low-pressure capability is one of the design’s most compelling aspects. Lower pressure lets the tire absorb more of the small bumps and roughness found on gravel, improving traction and reducing vibration transmitted to the rider.
Aerodynamics Still Matter on Gravel
The other major selling point is aerodynamics. A 54mm-deep rim might initially seem excessive for an off-road wheel, but modern gravel racing is fast enough that aerodynamic drag has become increasingly important. Zipp designed the rim to transition smoothly into an appropriately wide gravel tire, rather than treating the tire as an afterthought. This is especially relevant for riders in events where average speeds can stay above 30 km/h (about 18 mph) for long periods. At those speeds, aerodynamic gains can become meaningful, regardless of surface. The result is a wheelset that is wide and comfortable enough for rough gravel, but deep and aerodynamic enough for high-speed racing.
Who are the Zipp 303 XPLR Wheels Best For?
The 303 XPLR isn’t necessarily the ideal wheelset for every gravel rider. Its sweet spot is the rider who cares about speed — particularly someone racing long gravel events, chasing personal bests or riding fast mixed-surface routes.
They’re particularly compelling for:
o Gravel racers looking for aerodynamic gains without giving up low-pressure tires.
o Long-distance riders who value reduced vibration and improved comfort.
o Fast recreational riders who want race-level equipment.
o Riders on rough but fast gravel where traction and momentum are equally important.
o Road cyclists moving into gravel racing who don’t want to sacrifice speed.
For someone primarily riding slow, technical trails, carrying bikepacking equipment or exploring extremely rough terrain, there are probably more appropriate wheelsets. The XPLR is fundamentally a speed-oriented gravel wheel, not a mountain-bike-style adventure wheel.
The Catch to Note with the Zipp 303 XPLR Wheelset
The rim design comes with an important limitation: tire compatibility. The 303 XPLR is a hookless, tubeless-specific system and is compatible only with tires on Zipp’s approved list. Zipp specifically highlights its Goodyear XPLR Slick, XPLR Inter and XPLR Vector SW tires as being designed and optimized for the wheel. This may sound limiting, but most high-performance tires are hookless-compatible. Related, Zipp says that, for safety, a tire under 40mm should not be used on the wide XPLR rims. This isn’t the right wheelset if you want one wheelset that accepts both pavement and gravel tires.
The Verdict
The Zipp 303 XPLR represents an interesting shift in how gravel wheels are designed. Instead of simply taking a lightweight road wheel and making it strong enough for dirt, Zipp has optimized the entire wheel-and-tire system around the reality of modern gravel racing. The 32mm internal width, 54mm depth and large-volume tires are designed to work together, letting riders run low pressures while retaining aerodynamic efficiency.
For the right rider, though, the appeal isn’t simply having a lighter or deeper wheel. It’s the promise of maintaining speed across the entire gravel course — on smooth sections, rough sections, climbs and descents. This is what makes the 303 XPLR so interesting. It’s not trying to be the best wheel for every kind of cycling. Instead, it’s designed around a specific idea: the fastest gravel wheel is the one that loses the least speed when the road gets rough. And for gravel racers and fast all-road riders, that should be a compelling proposition.
