Lower Back Pain and Cycling

Proper biking posture, bike fit and back pain are deeply intertwined.  If you experience discomfort while riding, it’s critical you address this issue with an experienced bike fitter.  Up to 70% of regular (non-competitive) cyclists experience cervical, dorsal, or lumbar back pain, largely because their bicycles are not fitted properly. In fact, the Chaim Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, Israel, performed serial fluoroscopic studies of cyclists utilizing different types of bicycle seats (sport, mountain, and city-use bikes) and found that most of the cyclists tended towards hyperextension of the angle between their pelvis and spine.   This hyperextension resulted in pain, but could be reduced effectively in most cases by a readjustment of the seat.

Remember, Fit Werx carries saddles from Cobb Cycling, Fizik, ISM, Profile Design, San Marco, Serfas, Selle Italia, SMP, Specialized, Terry, WTB and more…and our bike fitters have the knowledge and equipment (like the gebioMized saddle pressure scan) to help you get exactly the fit you need to prevent injury and utilize your bike to its maximum potential.
