Registration Opens for People’s United Bank VTri as Part of the 2011 USA Triathlon Age Group & Sprint National Championships
BURLINGTON, VT — Vermont triathletes will soon be afforded an opportunity to showcase their talents on a national stage as USA Triathlon brings its 2011 Age Group and Sprint National Championship to Burlington on August 20. As part of the festivities, People’s United Bank will introduce a new event, the “People’s United Bank VTri.” This is a sprint-distance triathlon with registration available to the public. “We have worked closely with USA Triathlon so that we could provide local athletes with an opportunity to share the same course with national level competition,” states Michael Seaver, President of Peoples United Bank. Space in the Peoples United Bank VTri will be limited to 100 participants on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration for this event opened on May 1. Interested athletes may go to http://www.imathlete.com/events/2011PeoplesUnitedBankVTri/Register to register. A portion of the registration fees for the People’s United Bank VTri will be donated to Vermont Special Olympics.
People’s United Bank and RunVermont have agreed to form a unique partnership that will enable Burlington to serve as the host site for the 2011 and 2012 USA Triathlon National Championships. Over 2,000 athletes and several thousand spectators are expected to visit Vermont for these events. The 2012 event is planned for August 18.
”We are very excited to help bring the USA Triathlon National Championships to Vermont for the first time,” said Seaver. “This event supports healthy lifestyle choices, contributes to Vermont’s economy and is a worthy local cause that creates an opportunity for our local community to see world-class athletes in action.”
According to Peter Delaney, Executive Director of RunVermont this event will be hard to miss.
“To host this competition is a tremendous honor for our community and the impact of the event won’t be contained to Burlington alone. The course venues will extend into South Burlington and Shelburne, and participants and spectators will certainly be seeking services throughout Vermont for lodging, meals and recreational amenities before and after the competition. We expect the economic impact to exceed $2 million, and that is a conservative estimate,” states Delaney.
The USA Triathlon National Championships include Age Group and Sprint Divisions, as well as an elite athlete race featuring $20,000 in prize money. The Age Group and Sprint National Championships feature top amateur athletes in the U.S. competing for national titles and the opportunity to represent Team USA in the 2012 International Triathlon Union World Championships.
The 2011 event weekend kicks-off on August 19 with a multi-sport EXPO and packet pick-up at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center. The races begin on Saturday, August 20 at 7:30 a.m. with the Elite start, followed at 7:36 a.m. by the Age Group start. The Sprint National Championships begin at 12:30 p.m., including those competing in the People’s United Bank VTri. The event will conclude with an Awards Ceremony at the Sheraton Hotel on Saturday evening.
Course Distances for each event:
Elite & Age Group National Championships – 1.5 k swim, 40k bike, 10k run
Sprint National Championships & People’s United Bank VTri – 750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run
The USA Triathlon National Championship weekend will include the Multi-Sport EXPO & Packet Pickup at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center where athletes, spectators and the general public will have access to dozens of exhibitors including some offering Vermont’s finest products.
Additional sponsors secured for the event include Cabot Cheese, Long Trail Brewery and On Track Health & Fitness. “These partners will help us present some of the best that Vermont has to offer to this national audience,” said Tom Torti of the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce.
