Pluses
- • Machined in U.S.A. 88/188 hubs have very tight tolerances and are stiff, adjustable, well sealed and designed for all conditions.
- •Ultra-smooth Swiss bearings.
- •A truly aero wide toroidal rim shape.
- •Durability and braking of an alloy rim.
- •Wide rim design resists pinch flats better than narrower rims.
- •Under 1500 grams a pair.
Considerations
- • Not as forgiving as lower profile rim wheels like the Mavic R-Sys 2010 is the first year for this rim in alloy.
- •There are lighter wheels in the price range. But nothing that is this light and this aero with this nice a hub.
- •There are more aero wheels in the price range. But nothing that is this aero and light with this nice a hub.
- •If past Zipp clincher rims are any indicator, tires will fit very snug. Use very thin rim strips, such as the ones from Zipp, to make installation easier and expect some tires to require some wrestling.
In some ways, the 101 is the wheel we always knew Zipp could build we just wondered when they would.
Zipp makes some of the fastest wheels on the planet and holds multiple patents that assure that their aero secrets stay theirs - this has earned them the ability to honestly say that they have the fastest wheel line on the planet. One thing that makes Zipp unique is that they build all their carbon rims, hubs and wheels by hand in Indiana - real people hand assembling real speed technology in the U.S.A.- we like that. However, one thing that Zipp has lacked in their line is a lightweight and aero wheel that has a hub that is designed to be ridden every day while still being race capable and being priced well below $2000. At $1300, the Zipp 101 does all this and more. We may be in love.
We are going to predict that the 101 is a landmark wheel for Zipp and for the industry. A few reasons why:
- Very balanced. A fantastic blend of top quality hubs, aerodynamics, weight and durability.
- Great price of the technology.
- The 101 uses the same tight tolerance 88/188 and well-sealed hubs found on Zipp's ultra-low rolling resistance 202.
- The 101 offers a full Zipp toroidal rim shape and aerodynamics that are equal or better to the Zipp 202. This can save over 40 seconds over 40km compared to most rims in this price range.
- The new 30mm clincher toroidal rim design focuses on the wider platform that HED and Zipp have both been pursuing as of late. Benefits = more aero and less likely to pinch flat.
- Still uses bladed Sapim spokes and the same lacing and proven build pattern as Zipp's other top of the line wheels.
- Alloy brake tracks work well in all conditions.
- Alloy rims are cheaper to repair if damaged than carbon.
- Did we mention that they have the same hand machined 88/188 hubs and Swiss bearings found on the rest of Zipp's wheels? If not, we should have...
- Sub 1500 grams for a wheel this deep is very good.
- Deep 30mm rims tend to make responsive and stiff rims.
- Toroidal and wider 24.5mm rim help keep the rim reasonably comfortable.
The 101 finally allows Zipp to say that they not only make some of the fastest and most balanced wheels on earth over $2000, but also some of the fastest and most balanced wheels for well under $1500.
We expect the Zipp 101 to become a Fit Werx favorite in short order. Few, if any, wheels on earth do so much in such a balanced manner for this price. The Zipp 101 is designed to be capable of being ridden for daily training while still offering performance that approaches an uncompromising race wheel. Race wheel rolling resistance, aerodynamics and weight with training wheel durability and price - sounds good to us.
The 101 ships with a pair of Zipp's chromoly axle alloy levered skewers and alloy valve extenders.
