Pluses
- • One of the lightest wheels in its price range.
- • Comfortable ride.
- • R4 SL hub offers tool free bearing preload and ultralight weight.
- • Handbuilt. Some of the most evenly tensioned spokes and true out of the box.
- • Welded and machined Gen4 rims are shot peened and anodized to enhance durability and braking over pinned rims.
- • Alloy nipples all the way around minimize rotational weight.
Considerations
- • Rims do not have reinforcement eyelets.
- • Not the stiffest wheel in the category.
- • Alloy nipples on the drive side are not as durable as the brass on the EA90 SL.
- • SRAM Red (1090) cassette requires Red/1090 specific R4 SL cassette body and will not work on Shimano body. SRAM 1070 cassette will only work on Shimano body.
If you have read our page about the EA90 SL, this page is going to sound like a broken record (iPod…) in places. The handbuilt EA90 SLX is the same fundamental design as the SL, but with fewer spokes, full alloy spoke nipples, a lighter hubset and Grade 3 Hybrid Ceramic bearings. Thus, it is lighter and offers low rolling resistance, but is not as stiff. Get the SL if you are a bigger and/or more powerful rider concerned about stiffness. Otherwise, the SLX saves some weight and rolls silky smooth on its R4 SL hubset with ceramic upgrade.
As one of the biggest players in specialty sporting equipment in the world, Easton is anything but grassroots and “out of the garage”. However, when they bought Velomax, they bought one of the cycling industries best “out of the garage” success stories. While Easton is now the name on the wheels, the EA90 SL has not lost their Velomax Ascent soul.
The EA90 SLX is to the Velomax Ascent what the EA70 is to the Circuit – the latest version of a very proven wheel design. “EA” stands for “Easton Aluminum” and “90” means “top of the line” and today’s EA90 SLX is equipped with Easton’s very best new generation R4 SL all alloy hub, which takes the well thought out R4 design and cuts material and weight wherever possible. The R4 SL hubset on the EA90 SLX has bearing preload adjusters like the R4 hub and this allows the rider to adjust the bearings precisely and easily as they wear – thus maximizing bearing life. The hub is laced to Easton’s strongest and lightest aluminum rim with top of the line Sapim stainless butted spokes and all alloy nipples.
While the EA90 SLX may never be able to generate the same vibe that Velomax created with the Ascent, the current technology used in the R4 SL hubs and rims is a big step from the venerable Velomax days, yet they still preserve all that made Velomax an innovator in the first place. Regardless of the name on the side, the EA90 SLX is an excellent demonstration of a well executed application of modern technology without sacrificing common sense.
