Fluid trainers function by forcing a silicone fluid across a rotating impeller shaft. The harder you pedal the more fluid has to pass across the impeller and thus the higher the resistance. The fluid design creates a linear and progressive torque curve that makes for a natural and smooth feel.

CycleOps was arguably the first company to mass produce the fluid concept with any success in the '90's, but their design was plagued by leaky housing - so much so that the company was having trouble staying afloat. Luckily, Saris stepped in and bought CycleOps. Saris has a knack for finding companies with good ideas that are having trouble executing 100% (PowerTap being another example), buying them, fixing the issues and revitalizing the brand. Saris improved the original fluid design and fixed most of the leaking issues, took care of the warranty problems and made the Fluid2 one of the most successful selling trainers ever. The Fluid2 remains a solid trainer that is well priced and one of the only that is still made in the U.S.A.
